Zichao’s work concerns itself with peace in the world around us and the expression of the very silent moments of his own inner world – those moments when, isolating oneself from the outside, it feels like there is no sound or breath, only the atmosphere created by the scene streaming through. There is a sense of the familiar in his paintings offset by a dreamlike quality of the unfamiliar.

The viewer feels a sense of peaceful isolation which is heightened by Zichao’s unique use of colour. His muted hues offers us a view of our world in black and white and while we see hints of human presence in the bins and the electricity pylons, we rarely see people, only animals which seem random and out of place but which are crucial to the ponderous narrative of his ‘story’. This narrative is translated onto the canvas/linen in the form of text from the point of view of a bystander rather like a voiceover in a film. Combining the everyday with the fantastical, the resulting paintings have a beguiling and serene quality which draws the viewer into the story.
