Alice Mara was invited by the Norman Parkinson Archive to produce a body of work in response to the work of the iconic, fashion photographer, Norman Parkinson. This beautiful, vessel was designed by Alice as part of a larger body of three dimensional work following her trip to the Archive.
The Urn has been produced in a limited edition of 10 with the kind permission of The Norman Parkinson Archive.
When researching in the Archive Alice was drawn to the glamorous lives and decadence portrayed in Norman Parkinson’s photography. She returned time and time again to the white opulent buildings featured in the photographs – the swimming pools, blue skies, blue water, palm trees, villas, beautiful people in beautiful places. She asked herself, what was behind the glamour? Where was the normality?
Alice Mara encapsulates the Parkinson ‘glamour’ in her sculptural response to the photographer’s work but also peppers it with a little bit of her trademark irony presenting the other side of this world – a little bit of more of the everyday, lackluster world not evident in the work and world of Parkinson.
