As with some of Jacy Wall’s other tapestries, this piece, Threnody, began life as a much larger, all black tapestry. Started in January 2020, Jacy realised in March that her decision to make a black tapestry was strangely prescient, as the Covid 19 pandemic took hold across the world. She kept weaving throughout the first lockdown, and through the summer of 2020 but by September the artist felt that what she had started was not quite working as she had envisaged, so she cut the work off the loom, and proceeded to cut it up and reconstruct it into two separate works. The first piece to emerge, in December 2020, was Threnody, a quiet lament for the year just finishing. The act of deconstructing then reconstructing the original weaving into a new form felt appropriate, re-making a previous vision into something new, with firm handstitched details across the bottom of the black, leading into white.
