“Mark looks long and hard and with great clarity at his subjects but manages somehow to suggest the immediacy of a glance. Scattered objects carry weight not symbolic but emotional, so that what seems incidental becomes telling.” Playwright Tamsin Oglesby

Mark began his career illustrating book covers, having done illustrations for Gabriel Garcia Marquez, the Vintage edition of P.G.Wodehouse, Somerset Maugham, Aldous Huxley to name but a few). theatre posters for the National Theatre and record covers. He worked as an illustrator for 15 years, but was also doing his own paintings at the same time. Then in 1999, Mark had his first portrait accepted into the BP Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery. Another was accepted the following year and he was commended in 2002. This lead to Mark’s first portrait commission, and he has been working as a portrait painter since then. Recently he has been teaching part time at the National Portrait Gallery.

Mark’s series of tenderly painted portraits and interiors, highlight his ability to capture fleeting moments that would perhaps pass many of us by. His work deals with light and reflection, and the transforming of the mundane and everyday to the vital and precious. His observational creations become a unique and evocative language that seems able to heighten our awareness of the passage of time.

In addition to his work being awarded a prize ar the BP Portrait Awards in 2002, Mark has had work selected and exhibited at the RA Summer Show, The Hunting Art Prize, The NatWest Art Prize, The Laing Art Prize, The Royal Society of Watercolours, The Discerning Eye, The Threadneedle Prize and The Lynn Painters, The Sunday Times Watercolour Competitio and Stainers Prize.

Mark took a foundation at CCAT Cambridge and went on to do a degree in illustration at Brighton.
