Ink on Paper
Framed - non reflective museum glass
Nicholas Lees’ work on paper is a parallel activity to his three-dimensional work in ceramic. He explores the same issues of uncertain boundary, threshold, light, space and body. Working on paper enables the artist to be more playful, and to have a faster iterative cycle between idea and outcome. He uses an interaction between precise control and uncertain ephemerality in both cases. Repetitive mark making in the manner of a monoprint mirrors some of the making in porcelain, allowing in an element of imperfection in the imprecision of the printed marks. The use of water is a parallel to the effect of movement of body and light in relation to the porcelain works – it is a representation of the visual aura of the sculpture.
Nicholas was awarded the prestigious Desmond Preston Prize for Excellence in Drawing in 2012 while he was at the Royal College of Art.
