Lavinia Gallie
In her paintings Lavinia Gallie uses simple geometry and pattern as a means of animating the canvas or paper. Flat areas of colour are characteristic, with occasional sharp inflections or contrasts to accent a point. The initial geometry is offset by a relaxed handling of paint; a painting is rarely planned too much in advance, as a pictorial idea will often occur during the process of making, sometimes suggested by how the paint flows, sometimes by an unusual juxtaposition of colours.
