Lise Herud Braten
Overview
Lise Herud Braten was born in Norway in 1974 and grew up surrounded by nature and the urban environment of Oslo. She initially trained as a bespoke women’s tailor before embarking on an Art and Design Foundation Course at Bournville, UCE, followed by a BA (Hons) in Fashion and Textile Design at Ravensbourne College, UK.
Lise's interest in ceramics as an alternative creative outlet started with short courses at Putney School of Art in 2012, where she continued her learning for several years before joining communal studios in London. After nearly 20 years working in fashion, Lise switched to ceramics full-time in 2019 and co-founded a London studio and gallery in 2020.
Lise’s primary interests lie in creating decorative and sculptural forms with highly textured, expressive surfaces. Memories of growing up in a rugged landscape in Norway inform both shapes and mark-making, imbuing the pieces with a sense of place.
She employs a variety of techniques, often manipulating, carving and altering thrown forms to create organic and spontaneous shapes and structures, or carving objects and vessels out of solid blocks of clay. Using a variety of stoneware and porcelain clays, each piece is layered with slips, engobes, oxides, glazes, and natural ash, applied in a painterly and abstract way.
Lise has been exhibiting across the UK since 2017 and in New York since 2021.
