Mizuyo Yamashita
Mizuyo Yamashita is a Japanese ceramicist based in London. After moving to the UK to study English in 2000 she visited “I am a camera” at the Saatchi Gallery and encountered the work of Grayson Perry; it was this exhibition from which her love of ceramics began.
Mizuyo went on to study ceramics at Kensington and Chelsea College, and continued at City Lit and then at University of Westminster. Mizuyo has been exhibiting widely since graduation and has been with Cavaliero Finn since the company’s inception in 2004.
Her work ranges from small objects to installation, currently she is making tableware on the wheel.
This work is inspired by Asian and European potteries. Mizuyo has recently explored Japanese and Korean techniques such as Shinogi (fluting), Kohiki (powder blown) and Mishima (inlaying). By applying them to Western shapes, she is trying to imbue her work with a modern, yet earthly feel.
In 2017 Mizuyo was invited to submit her own designs for a special edition of work to be sold in the Tate Modern Shop – Tate Edit – to support the Giacometti Show at the Tate Modern.
