Talking about this new work Katharine said: "This woven work is an interventional piece taking my Colourfield woven paintings, and introducing a classical tapestry technique this technique is called diagonal stepped cut back. It traverses and climbs the canvas from left to right. This intervention is an irreversible decision a fault line through the strata but also a place of engagement and observation. The title Verdure Colourfield refers to the tradition of verdure tapestries of the 16th century with their foliage and landscape images bring the outside in. When I weave it is very much from within and it is my deep connection with nature from my childhood in the Cumbria and rural West Sussex studio that is projected outwards in an absolutely abstract way. This happens through the investigation of dyeing and handwoven tapestry, pairing back to the core process."
Katharine has created textiles for over 30 years, specialising in conventional flat wall works and smaller three-dimensional sculptural pieces. She also weaves large scale commissions at Atelier Weftfaced and West Dean Tapestry Studio. The constructively open-ended nature of the medium is at the heart of Katharine’s practice. In 2016 Katharine received the Theo Moorman Award and she has been shortlisted for the Cordis Prize in 2016 and 2019. In 2020 her work was included in the exhibition Common Thread at the New Art Centre, Wiltshire.
