These hand woven tapestry works are part of a wider body of work called the Colourfield Series. One of four tapestries, the Colourfield Four Seasons tapestries, the works are woven from bottom to top and explore an interchange of colour, using hand dyed worsted wools created in the heart of the West Sussex countryside from the artist's garden dye studio. It is these yarns along with one strand of mercerised cotton that create the coloured weft. Eight strands of yarn create one weft piece, this allows up to eight colours to be interchanged. A warm luminous and gentle movement of colour radiates throughout each tapestry, giving a sense of the meditative process that is explored, to create a sense of harmony.
Katharine has created textiles for over 30 years, specialising in conventional flat wall works and smaller three-dimensional sculptural pieces. She also weaves large scale commissions at Atelier Weftfaced and West Dean Tapestry Studio. The constructively open-ended nature of the medium is at the heart of Katharine’s practice. In 2016 Katharine received the Theo Moorman Award and she has been shortlisted for the Cordis Prize in 2016 and 2019. In 2020 her work was included in the exhibition Common Thread at the New Art Centre, Wiltshire.
