Caron Penney’s love of system and repetition is represented in GUILT. The warp and weft create a naturally occurring grid, which has been reflected in textiles throughout millennium, especially those from the Andean culture. The word ‘Guilt’ is stacked in a vertical context which emphasizes the weight of the feeling and also reflects the decorative weavings of ancient textiles. Seeing a single word in an isolated context, pushes the viewer to question its meaning. The abstract quality of the single word expression is fundamental to Caron’s minimal political statements, which seek to reflect humanity and its fallible qualities. The use of 'gilt' gold yarns in this piece is no trivial decision, being a homophone of the word 'guilt' and perhaps a reflection on the relationship between wealth and power.
