Fur and Flesh draws on the myth of Hercules’ first labour, set by King Eurystheus: the slaying of the Nemean Lion.
The lion’s fur was impervious to weapons, forcing Hercules to confront the beast with his bare hands and ultimately strangle it to death. After the victory, he wore the lion’s fur as a symbol of strength and protection.
On the reverse of the vessel, scenes of Hercules and his lover Hylas offer a quieter counterpoint to the violence of the labour. Their relationship reveals a more intimate side of the hero, balancing physical strength with affection, desire and companionship. Together, these narratives explore the tension between fur and flesh, power and tenderness.
