Although only nominally functional, Hannah Tounsend's Chawan inspired vessels are informed by the considerations of use. They are forms to hold in the hand as well as to survey and curate. They are vessels not adhering to strict chanoyu principles, but informed by this context. The artist is drawn to the great importance of seasonality within the chanoyu. In response to this she created a tall chawan in predominantly dark colours inspired by the sunken hearth season of November to April. This is paired with a corresponding shallower piece in paler hues for the warmer brazier season months of May to October.
