Landscape is an enduring subject of Gill’s work. Her recent paintings/editions focus on liminal spaces, when shifts in light have a transformative effect on the landscape and suggest a threshold between the everyday and the extraordinary. The landscapes draw upon observation, memory and invention to present an ambiguous and elusive reality at a point where the familiar is rendered strangely unfamiliar. Always uninhabited, these illusionary scenes are often played out at night; the anonymity of woodland, still lakes and deserted roads, attempting to assimilate themselves into the viewer’s own memories, weaving together narratives of places both real and imagined.
Formal influences shaping Gill’s work include the landscapes of German Romantic painters such as Caspar David Friedrich and The Sublime within English Romantic painting to American photographers and filmmakers such as Robert Adams and David Lynch. Her subject matter is directly influenced by Gill’s own experience and travel often forms an integral part of the development of new bodies of work.
