Caron Penney likes to reveal the significance of tapestry, so often it is described as life’s rich fabric. Capturing the harmony of a day or the dissonance of a sudden and disarming event which changes futures dreamt. She uses the softness and practicality of wool in contrast to the wealth and harshness of gilt gold threads. Juxtaposing metaphors are layered within the material of Penney’s woven fibres. Focussing on the migration of a day, a city, the sun or the moon. Penney seeks balance and order in beautiful combinations of gentle grey tones combined revealing the natural grid of this woven art form. Take a moment in time, and repeat it, and a whole life is mapped out - a whole world is revealed, a whole future exposed. Life is a repeating rhythm, a continual beat of the drum, forever moving, never permanent, interwoven.
Enthralled by this woven art form, whom she has worked with like a friend or mentor for over thirty years, it forms a protective barrier around her. Tapestry weaving is an ancient weaving technique formed millennia ago, which is created by manipulating warp and weft in sequence. To weave is to breathe, to be calm and to relinquish her anxiety, fear, fun, love, humour within the body of the fabric. For tapestry is rich in knowledge and power, as it has been throughout history.
