Triptych Table
Meredith exploits ash’s responsiveness in its green state, employing steam bending to articulate the legs into a cohesive, structurally interdependent form. The process reveals the latent pliability within the timber: fibres soften, yield, and are reoriented through pressure and restraint. What emerges is a base that appears fluid yet possesses significant structural integrity, its curvature both expressive and load-bearing.
The tabletop echoes this organic logic. Rather than imposing geometry upon the material, the form is resolved through dialogue with the inherent tendencies of the wood. Surface treatment further intensifies this exchange.Through controlled charring, the ash is rendered a deep, carbonised black, exposing growth rings and subtle tonal variations. The scorched surface does not conceal the material but rather amplifies its temporal depth, making visible the years embedded within the grain.
In its synthesis of steam, fire and structure, the Triptych Table becomes an articulation of transformation: green timber is bent, burned, and stabilised into a form that honours both fragility and endurance. The work situates itself within a lineage of Irish woodcraft while extending that tradition into a contemporary sculptural language.
