Talking about this work Mia Cavaliero said: "Last winter, I’d been observing how the plants in the garden continued to produce intense colour right up until they were covered in snow. The plants struggled to sustain themselves against the weight of the snow and finally surrendered this battle to the ensuing frost. I could see all this from my studio and made the two small paintings ‘Slow sad Michaelmas’ and ‘On frozen ground’ in response.

"I notice how I resist the onset of winter as an unwelcome season but eventually I start to see the beauty in this time of dormancy and appreciate how the sun still manages to cast its light. This is what I hoped to express in my most recent painting ‘and a weak light falls’ taken from the poem “Winter’s Gaze” by Tomas Tranströmer who writes so beautifully about winter."
