'Scabard' is from a series of works begun in 2013 that were
made, cut and then reconstructed. The original idea for this piece came about
as a response to an Iron Age sword and scabard in Salisbury Museum. This
ancient, eroded, but still proud object had also been made, broken, mended and
adapted at some point in its history. There is deliberate fragility and
fragmentation to the body of the tapestry, but the nail hints at past brute
strength, and the cloudy red silk lining and small flashes of colour hint at
something still very alive.
