Juliette Bigley
Overview
Juliette Bigley is sculptor who uses base and precious metals to explore how we experience our emotional and physical place in the world and how we negotiate the interface between the physical world that surrounds us and the intangible worlds of emotion, belief, thought, language and memory. Focussing particularly on lines and thresholds, Juliette's work is sculptural and often comprises groups of objects.
‘I make to understand how the world fits together. The way in which our internal experiences interact with the physical world is the stuff of our lives… and yet we have very little understanding of how the material and immaterial aspects of our experience interrelate… Making, which by its nature combines idea with material, is a microcosm of this relationship, and is the focus of my practice.’ Juliette's sculptures have their own lives, as each viewer is free to project their own meaning, and to form their own attachment to them; ‘I like to leave a space in my work for people to find a little bit of their own self.’
Juliette trained at The Cass School of Art gaining BA (First Class) and a research MA (Distinction). She has exhibited nationally and internationally including Design Miami, ArtGeneve, Tresor Contemporary and Collect, winning the prize for Collect Open in 2018. She was selected by the Design Council as one of their Ones to Watch, for potential to contribute to the future of Britain as a design nation and has been featured in, amongst others, CRAFTS Magazine, Craft and Design Magazine, the Evening Standard and the FT's How to Spend It.
Juliette's work has been acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Irish State collections and the Goldsmiths Company Collection. She is a member of the Royal Society of Sculptors and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
