Judith Tucker’s paintings explore one of the last functioning plotlands: the Humberston Fitties in Lincolnshire. The word the “Fitties” actually originally meant saltmarsh. These self- built chalets, houses, and sheds of the Fitties lie low behind marshy beach and dunes close to the Humber estuary. Here, since between the wars, local people and visitors have erected their diverse dwellings with individualistic names and styles, in order to enjoy the simple, restorative pleasures of seaside life. These four paintings take us back in time, as these are paintings of very early shelters and chalets inspired by archival materials. The paintings are all set at dusk and explore the play of light and dark and the uncanny transformations of caravans and bungalows the that take place after hours.
